IPL 2025: Rabada Back in India, Awaits Clearance for Next Match

Gujarat Titans could get a significant reinforcement for the remaining stretch of the 18th IPL season. The South African pacer Kagiso Rabada joined the team at Ahmedabad on May 3 after returning to India. Earlier in the day, he admitted that he had failed a recreational test and is serving a suspension.
Seeking Clarity on the Situation
While GT has not released an official statement, it is understood that the franchise will consult with Cricket South Africa (CSA) for guidance. The exact substance Rabada consumed remains unclear, but it is speculated to be either cocaine or cannabis, as a recreational drug.
WADA Regulations and Potential Suspension
According to the WADA code, recreational drug use typically results in a three-month suspension. But, this can be reduced to 30 days if the cricketer can prove the substance was used out of competition and has completed an approved Substance of Abuse treatment program. Rabada’s one-month absence from April 3 to May 3 suggests he may have already served a one-month suspension.
CSA’s Statement
CSA issued a statement calling the incident ‘regrettable’ but acknowledged Rabada’s commitment to upholding professional standards and the player’s passion for cricket. It reiterated its commitment to drug-free sport and noted the importance of adhering to regulations.
GT’s Upcoming Matches
The Titans have four matches left in the group stage of the 18th IPL season. Thus, on May 6, they will play against MI (on March 29, they beat this opponent by 36 runs). GT will then travel to Delhi on May 11 for an away game against the local Delhi Capitals (DC). This will be the second meeting between these teams in the tournament. On April 19, GT won by seven wickets (with four balls remaining).
On May 14 , the Titans will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), whom they lost to by six wickets on April 12. Finally, on May 18, GT will play at home against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), whom they have not faced yet this season.
