IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell’s Fractured Finger Ends His Season

On Wednesday, April 30, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by four wickets (with two balls remaining) and stormed into the top three of the 18th IPL season. By doing so, they also eliminated their opponent’s chances of making it to the tournament’s playoffs. That said, Glenn Maxwell’s injury overshadowed the joy of victory. According to PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, the Australian broke his finger. There is no official information yet, but the player will likely not help his team in the current season.
Details of the Injury
Iyer expressed his disappointment about Maxwell’s injury. He mentioned that the team hadn’t decided on a replacement but were confident in their current squad and the variety of players they had who could win matches.
Marcus Stoinis, Maxwell’s teammate at PBKS, revealed that Glenn had suffered the injury during training. It was before their previous match against reigning champions, KKR, where he still managed to bat. For the CSK clash, the Kings replaced the cricketer with Suryansh Shedge, opting to play only three overseas players.
Stoinis explained that Glenn initially thought the injury wasn’t too bad, but it worsened, and scans confirmed the severity. Alas, it appeared that the player would be out for the tournament.
PBKS’ Plan
Head coach Ricky Ponting acknowledged the challenge of finding a substitute due to the ongoing PSL. He hinted that the Kings might sign an Indian cricketer. Ponting mentioned that the team was being patient, as Maxwell’s injury was recent and they were exploring options.
The coach also said that the team was looking at Indian talent and considering youngsters who could fill roles within the team. He stated that they would take a couple of cricketers to Dharamsala for a closer look and that a decision would need to be made before their 12th game.
