IPL 2025 Suspended: BCCI Puts Tournament on Hold Due to Security Concerns

On Friday, May 9 the BCCI officially announced that the 18th season of IPL has been temporarily halted. For now only for seven days, but the timeline could increase if the situation on the India-Pakistan border remains unstable. With the decision to stop the tournament, the officials showed solidarity with the entire country during this challenging time. They also emphasized that this measure will help protect the teams, players and civilians.
Prioritizing Safety and Unity
In the official announcement of the suspension, the BCCI expressed full solidarity with the Government of India and the Armed Forces. It is stated that the decision was taken after consultation with representatives of clubs, players, broadcasters, sponsors and other partners. The Board expressed gratitude to official broadcaster Jiostar, title sponsor Tata, and other commercial partners for their support of the decision.
The suspension comes at a critical stage of the season. As of now, three teams — Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) — have been eliminated from playoff contention. The remaining seven franchises have varying chances of making it to the last four.
Revised Schedule Plans
The tournament is currently suspended for a week. The BCCI plans to announce a revised schedule and venues after a detailed assessment in coordination with relevant authorities. It reassured fans that it would work towards resuming the tournament responsibly once the situation permits.
Tournament Resumption Windows
The BCCI is exploring two primary options for the potential resumption of the competition. The first is the September window, which was reserved for the Asia Cup. Alternatively, officials will consider utilizing any acceptable gap that occurs between India’s scheduled international assignments. It is rumored that if the tournament resumes in May, the remaining matches could be played in three stadiums. These are likely to be venues in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. The teams have 12 group stage matches and four playoff games left to play.
