IPL: Serum Institute CEO in Talks to Buy RCB for $2 Billion

The recently concluded IPL 2025 season was a triumphant one for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The franchise clinched its first-ever championship title, ending a 17-year drought without a trophy. However, the championship might not be the only significant news associated with the squad in 2025.

RCB is one of the most popular franchises in the IPL, despite not winning a championship for 17 years. It boasts a very loyal and large fan base, and its leader is the great Virat Kohli, who has been with the club since its inception.
The victory in the tournament significantly increased the brand’s value and the team’s attractiveness to investors. The current owner, United Spirits Limited (USL), a subsidiary of Diageo, has decided to put the franchise up for sale. They have set a hefty price tag for its acquisition – $2 billion (nearly INR 17,762 crore). If the sale goes through at this price, it will set an absolute record not only for the IPL but for any cricket club sales.
The main contender
Insiders report that there is an investor who is not deterred by the high price tag. This is Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of the Serum Institute of India. If he decides to purchase the team, it will happen before the IPL 2026 season. Experts believe that in the event of a successful deal, its amount will set a benchmark for future sales of other league clubs.
