Rohit Sharma Steps Down as India’s ODI Captain, Gill Takes Over

Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as captain

The Indian cricket team is continuing its preparations for the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. It is expected that Shubman Gill will captain the squad in these clashes, replacing the legendary Rohit Sharma. This will be the first time the rapidly progressing 24-year-old batsman will captain the team in this format, having already led it in Test and T20I formats. Gill has played 55 ODIs, scoring 2,775 runs and 8 centuries.

What about Rohit Sharma?

The change in captaincy does not mean that the great Rohit Sharma is leaving the squad. On the contrary, both he and another star veteran, Virat Kohli, will continue to play for the Men in Blue and share their experience with the younger cricketers. The team’s coaching staff has no intention of parting with these stars. The decision to hand over the captaincy to Gill is a strategic one, aimed at gradually building a new team around the young leader, with the goal of being fully prepared for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

India and Australia will play three ODI matches from October 19th to 25th, and they will also play five T20Is from October 29th to November 8th.
